What is true yajna (ceremonial sacrifice)?
Giving in charity accumulated wealth is Dravya yajnam.
When all physical and mental activities are utilized for sadhana (spiritual discipline) it is Thapo yajna. (Tapas)
Doing karma (action) but yet remaining unbound by it, is Yoga Yajna.
When the mind (chittha) moves in one direction and the sense organs (indriyas) move in another, the person is doubly confused. So keep attachment afar. When you accomplish this, every act of yours becomes a sacrifice (Yajna).
Whatever you speak becomes a holy mantra; and the place where you plant your foot is rendered holy.
Baba (thought for the day)
My first reaction to that thought for the day was like, no that is difficult too many Sanskrit expressions.
But that should just be a reason to at least try to understand it. If we look closer at it after all it is not that difficult.
Baba tells first we should do puja or yagna or arati to the inner higher self, (Atma-linga) is the inner God in the heart.
And how should we do it? By keeping our thoughts and intentions in the mind pure. Therefore, what he tells is to keep purity in the mind and that is the best offering to the inner divinity.
And then he tells us how to do real sacrifice.
If we have lots of wealth, we can use it for charity.
If all our mental and physical intention goes in direction of spiritual discipline, it is called Tapas.
If we are performing action, Karma and are not bound by it and giving the result to him only it is Yoga.
But if the intention of our mind and the senses go into different directions, we get even more confused, double confused, because we see the mind in charity, but the senses are enjoying themselves and we think by the mind we go in direction of the divine, but on the sense level there is attachment, the result is big confusion.
No attachment and whatever we do will become sacrifice. And even every word will be like a holy mantra and our feet will make a place holy by being on that place.
Baba tells that the mansion of self-realization needs a strong foundation and that is self-confidence, the firm believe we can do it.
The walls are self-satisfaction.
But to live in a house, we need the roof. It is that roof which is self-sacrifice and about that level he talks here in that thought for the day.
If the foundation is not strong enough, the house will collapse if the roof is too heavy.
If we look around at the difficulties on the spiritual path it seems to be that level which is the most difficult. If there is attachment left, the roof will not get finished.
If we have not understood and are not able to absorb on a self-level, the roof will not be completed. Only if we get that self-sacrifice level right we will be able to live in the house.
The foundation is sath, the experience of the basic existence and truth, Chit is growing consciousness and the roof. Only if those two are there it will be possible to live in the house and enjoy Ananda, living in the house of self-realization.
